More Romanian tourists travel to Austria

Romanian Times

The number of Romanian tourists to Austria rose last year, after two years of a decline, Austria's National Tourism Office in Romania announced today (Weds).

The top destination of Romanians travelling to Austria was Vienna, followed by Kaprun in winter season and Salzburg in the summer.

There were 275,800 Romanians travelling to Austria last year, which is 5.5 per cent more than the year before. They made a total of 853,800 overnights stays, which is 3.8 per cent more than the year before. A record was set back in 2008, when Romanians were registered for 898,000 overnight stays in Austria.

The increase of the number of Romanian tourists comes after two years of a decline, as their number dropped by 13.6 per cent in 2009 and by 4.4 per cent in 2010, according to Austria's National Tourism Office.

Most Romanians prefer to travel to Austria during the winter season, 63 per cent of the stays being booked for the winter time.

Gabriele Lenger, manager of Austria's National Tourism Office in Romania, said: "Our survey among tourists shows Romanians appreciate the diverse offer of Austria - from ski regions with best prepared ski slopes up to the apres ski and the spas at the hotels."

Romania is now 14th, from being previously 26th back in 2006, in a ranking of most important markets sending tourists to Austria, after the United States, but ahead of Sweden and Spain.

Romanians spent more time in Austria during their holidays, from 2.5 days back in 2005 up to 3.1 days on average last year.

The report also shows a third of Romanian tourists in Austria prefer staying at 4 and 5 star hotels, way above other nationalities.

Austria accommodated 34.6 million tourists last year, this number represents 1.2 million tourists more than the year before. There were 126 million overnight stays, which is 1.1 million more than in 2010.
