Sleeping in an igloo at 2,000 metres

Romanian Times

Holidaymakers can spend Christmas tide and a New Year's Party like Eskimos in an ice igloo at Balea Lake at an altitude of 2,000 metres in the Fagaras Mountains, Romania.

The famous Hotelul de Gheata (Ice Hotel) at Balea Lake, will have an ice igloo built near it for tourists this year.

Marketing official Adelina Grigoriu told Agerpres that "there will be ice beds covered in wood, mattresses, bed sheets, furs and sleeping bags, inside."

The temperature inside the igloo, as in the Ice Hotel, never goes above 1 to 2 degrees Celsius.

For experiencing a unique adventure, the guests must wear warm clothes, caps, boots and wool socks, and sleep in sleeping bags.

Those less courageous may try the accommodation at the Ice Hotel that numbers ten rooms this year, each bearing the name of a style of music. For instance, who spends the night in the rock room will have ice-carved musical instruments instead of bedside tables.

Fifty English travellers have already booked rooms at the Ice Hotel at Balea Lake. Some of them will not only sleep, but they have meals in the hotel's restaurant at tables and chairs made of ice. And they will also attend an unusual wedding party. "The wedding will be officiated at the Ice Church and the guests are accommodated and celebrate at the Ice Hotel," stressed Grigoriu.

The Ice Hotel and the ice igloo and the Ice Church at Balea Lake will be inaugurated on 25 December, and their construction will begin in December when the frost is hard enough.
