Prince Charles to visit Romania

Romanian Times

Prince Charles of Wales will visit Romania later this week, the Mediafax news agency reported today (Mon).

The heir to the British throne is to have meetings with President Traian Basescu and PM Emil Boc.

He will also visit several villages in Transylvania, where he also has property.

Prince Charles told journalists during a previous visit: "Transylvania is in my blood. I have family connections here and that's why I am very interested in this region."

Prince Charles is supporting a foundation to preserve local customs, cultural heritage and ecological agriculture.

The Prince's properties in Romania are in traditional rural villages where he promotes the restoration of historic buildings and environmentally friendly methods of agriculture.

Prince Charles travels to Romania annually to promote the restoration of old Germanic villages in Transylvania.

He currently owns a property in Viscri village in central Romania and an apple orchard at Malancrav, in Transylvania.

His ‘Mihai Eminescu Foundation’ provides financial support to two Germanic villages, also in Transylvania, that date back to the 7th century, in an effort to preserve their cultural and natural history.

Less than 100 native Germans now live in the area, once known for its apple orchards.

On previous trips the prince visited the tomb of his great-great-great-grand-mother, Contesse Claudia Rhedley, in Mures county.
