Austrian tourism to up efforts in Romania

Austrian tourism officials are planning to increase marketing activities in Romania, the Austrian Times reports.

Austria Marketing (ÖW) boss Petra Stolba said today (Mon): "Romania is growing fast and is a very important country in the CEE [Central and Eastern European] region."

Stolba said the plan was to liaise with Austria’s nine provinces over coordinating marketing initiatives in Romania and the United Kingdom from 2011.

The "Alliance of Ten" initiative will start operating in Germany, Italy and the Netherlands next year. Most people from abroad spending holidays in Austria come from those three countries.

Stolba said she hoped the Austrian tourism industry would become even more competitive through increased networking.

Vorarlberg tourism bosses meanwhile have announced that there was a record number of guests in 2009 as 934,469 spent their holidays in the western province last year.

Vorarlberg tourism chief Christian Schützinger said 60 per cent of guests had come from neighbouring Germany.

"Germany remains the most important market for us," he said, adding that he was optimistic about 2010 figures.

Thousands of people are expected to visit provincial capital Bregenz for this year’s Bregenzer Festspiele (Bregenz Festival) of opera and classical music.

Tens of thousands of people from all over the world visit the Alpine province to go hiking, while even more go to Vorarlberg to ski.

Austrian Hoteliers Association (ÖHV) official Martin Stanits has meanwhile appealed to the provinces of Styria and Burgenland to increase their efforts to target international guests

Stanits said last week that around 90 per cent of people spending holidays in Styria and Burgenland were Austrians. He called on local tourism chiefs to increase their attempts to "internationalise" their offers to attract more guests from abroad.

ÖHV research based on figures from 2008 found out that Vienna had retained its top spot as the most popular holiday destination in the country.
