TUI says Romania is eight years behind Bulgaria

Romanian Times

Romania is about eight years behind Bulgaria in tourism development and foreign investment in that sector, according to German TUI manager for Morocco, Romania and Bulgaria Detlev Hohne as quoted by Deutsche Welle.

Hohne said Romania was still unable to attract foreign investors, while Bulgaria had made progress after the privatization process in the tourism industry.

Hohne added that Romania could be a popular tourist destination but at the moment was unable to promote its offers.

Last month, TUI Romania General Manager Tim Grosse said Romania’s foreign tourism promotion budget of only five million Euros was very low and needed to be increased to obtain satisfactory results.

Another problem identified by the TUI manager was the short summer season in Romania, which had caused foreign investors interested in tourism businesses active for at least six months in the year to look elsewhere.

In 2006, TUI stopped flights to Romania and eliminated Romanian destinations from its catalogues, citing bad accommodations, high hotel prices, too much noise and dirty resorts.

The German TUI group, one of the world’s leading tour operators, reentered the Romanian market in 2010.
