Rosia Montana may be included on UNESCO World Heritage List

Romanian Times

The Romanian Culture Ministry has launched a procedure to have the Rosia Montana site put on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The site is threatened with destruction by a controversial cyanide gold-mining project.

Ministry's councillor Hegedus Csilla announced the news today (Fri) during a conference on "community, patrimony and durable development" organised by the Soros Foundation.

The Rosia Montana region, which was called Alburnus Maior in Roman times, features a priceless archeological complex dating back to the Roman Empire. Archeologists have said the complex is unique and one of the largest dating back to the Roman Empire.

The World Heritage List includes 890 sites forming part of the world's cultural and natural heritage that the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value.

Romania has seven sites on the list: the Danube Delta, the churches of Moldavia, the Monastery of Horezu, villages with fortified churches in Transylvania, the Dacian Fortresses of the Orastie Mountains, the historic centre of Sighişoara and the wooden churches of Maramureş.

The gold-mining project in Rosia Montana launched by a Canadian company is highly controversial because of environmental danger since it entails cyanide mining.
