Brukenthal Museum closure

Romanian Times

Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu is to close today (Weds) for three days and another day next week under new laws sending civil servants home for eight days before the end of the year to cut costs.

The museum has been open in the Brukenthal palace since 1817 displaying the collections of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal.

Von Brukenthal (1721-1803) was the only representative of the Transylvanian Saxon community who reached high public office in the Austrian Empire under the Empress Maria Theresia (1717 – 1780), the first such office being that of Chancellor of Transylvania.

He began acquiring his art collection – one of the most valuable of the time – while he was working in Vienna.
