Romanian star team Steaua Bucuresti failed to qualify in the Europa League playoffs after losing 1-0 (1-0) last night (Thurs) against Dutch team FC Twente Enschede, in the away match.
Steaua lost the first leg match too, against Twente, with the same score, a week ago in the new National Arena stadium in Bucharest.
The winning goal was scored by De Jong, in minute 28, who profited from Steaua’s goalkeeper, Ciprian Tatarusanu’s blunder.
Last week the team coached by Ilie Stan lost against Twente 1-0 (0-0), after Ola John scored in minute 53.
The result is even more disappointing as the team financier, Gigi Becali, had hoped for his team to play in the final of the Europa League, scheduled to take place in Bucharest on 9 May in the 50,000-seater stadium.
Steaua qualified for the last sixteen of Europe’s Soccer League in Group J.
