Pitch in best condition for Steaua-Twente match, authorities say

Romanian Times

The pitch for the Europa League match Steaua Bucuresti - Twente Enschede will be in optimal condition, the Bucharest town hall promises, after criticism of the National Arena turf.

Local authorities issued a statement saying the turf is currently covered with a tarpaulin to maintain a certain temperature and humidity at the level of the grass and to ensure its micro climate.

"This maintains the condition of the turf in optimal state, which ensures a good pitch for the play, without it being necessary to replace parts of the turf," the statement reads.

The Bucharest town hall also said that the stadium's roof was not used, to cover the pitch, because it would have been a "risk manoeuvre", due to the blizzards and the weather conditions.

Romania has been under the weather advisory code for freezing weather and heavy snowfall for two weeks. Temperatures are expected to drop to as low as minus 25C in the next few days, an orange warning for frost being issued and valid until Monday.

The match Steaua Bucuresti - Twente is scheduled for 16 February as part of the Europa League competition.

The newly built stadium National Arena in Bucharest, which cost 230 million Euros to build and has 50,000 seats, was inaugurated last September when the turf's condition was very poor.
