Nadia Comaneci's father dies

Romanian Times

Former Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci came to Bucharest today (Thurs) after her father died last night (Weds).

According to reports, Nadia Comaneci came to Bucharest, after her father, Gheorghe Comaneci, 76, died, at the University Hospital in Bucharest, where he had been hospitalised since 26 December, for liver disease.

Unique Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci, 50, stunned the world on 18 July 1976 when at the age of 14 she became the first gymnast ever to score a perfect 10 in the uneven parallel bars. She received another six 10s before the end of the Olympics.

The US news magazine TIME put her on its cover in August 1976 under the headline "She's perfect."

She secretly fled from communist Romania in 1989, before the regime collapsed, and settled in the United States.

Nadia currently lives in Norman, Oklahoma, with her husband, Bart Conner and their son Dylan.
