Perfect Nadia turns 50

Romanian Times

Unique Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci will turn 50 on Saturday and American portal Oklahoma News praises her in an article.

Nadia Comaneci, who stunned the world on 18 July 1976 when at the age of 14 she became the first gymnast ever to score a perfect 10 in the uneven parallel bars. She received another six 10s before the end of the Olympics.

The US news magazine TIME put her on its cover in August 1976 under the headline "She's perfect."

She secretly fled from communist Romania in 1989, before the regime collapsed, and settled in the United States.

The article in Oklahoma News reads: "In Romania, she learned hard work is a necessary part of success. In America, she learned of freedom. Her story is a reminder of what we often take for granted.

"I live everywhere now — Oklahoma, Los Angeles, Bucharest — and have dual citizenship, Romanian and American. I understand politics and freedom and the price paid for defection from your homeland, family, and friends in return for the unknown," Nadia wrote in her book.

"I comprehend opening your hands and letting slide everything you are for the promise of what you might one day be."

Nadia currently lives in Norman, Oklahoma, with her husband, Bart Conner and their son Dylan.
