Rangers fined for fan clashes with guards during Unirea match

David Hill

UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body yesterday (Thurs) fined Rangers FC 20,000 Euros.

It also ordered them to pay the cost of the damage to the stadium infrastructure during fan clashes with stewards during the match against FC Unirea Urziceni in Champions League play.

The decision was taken as a result of the improper conduct of the Scottish club's supporters at the UEFA Champions League Group G match against FC Unirea Urziceni in Romania on 4 November, UEFA said.

Romanian club Unirea Urziceni was fined 8,000 Euros for lack of organisation at the same match.

Both clubs will have three days from receipt of the decisions in which to appeal against the sanctions.

Romanian champion Unirea Urziceni played to a 1-1 draw against Glasgow Rangers.

Dan Petrescu’s team tried to repeat its surprising 4-1 victory in the first-leg match in what the Chelsea legend had previously said would be the most-important match of his career as a coach.

At half-time, some Rangers’ fans clashed with stewards and appeared to be throwing things in the section housing around 2,000 of them. Things calmed down by the time the second half got underway after an announcement that the game would be suspended unless the violence stopped.

Unirea Urziceni is currently second in Group G with five points, while Rangers is last with two points.
