Foreign referees banned from League 1 matches

Romanian Times

The Romanian Football Federation (RFF) decided yesterday (Tues) to ban foreign referees from matches in League I after the start of the second leg of the national championship.

RFF said a UEFA convention on referees it had recently signed had accounted for its decision.

RFF decided last August to use foreign referees following bribery scandals in Romanian football.

Romania’s Professional Football League (LPF) decided in July to demote FC Arges to the second league after club owner Cornel Penescu and several referees were arrested in April on bribery charges related to match-fixing.

LPF also declared Penescu persona non-grata in Romanian football in light of allegations of match-fixing and fined him 70,000 Euros or 300,000 lei.
