Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu was awarded the title of Honoured Coach by sports officials in Ukraine today (Weds).
Lucescu won the UEFA Cup this year with his team Shakhtar Donetsk.
It is the first time a foreigner has been awarded that title, Ukrainian sports officials said.
Lucescu received the award in his hospital room, where he is recovering after heart surgery following a mild heart attack last week.
Ukrainian Minister for Youth and Sports Yuriy Pavlenko said the most-prestigious coaching title in the country had been awarded to the "miners"’ coach on behalf of the Ukrainian state.
The word "miners" refers to the Donetsk area, which has many mines and is a centre of the coal, iron and steel industry.
Lucescu said that he had worked for Ukraine and won rating points and the UEFA Cup for it. Lucescu quoted Shakhtar President Rinat Akhmetov: "For me, Ukrainians are those who work for Ukraine."
Lucescu promised he would return to coach the team as soon as there was no more risk to his heath.
