Romanian volunteer disappeared off Raoul Island in New Zealand

Romanian volunteer Mihai Muncus-Nagy, 33, disappeared off Raoul island in New Zealand, during a volunteering mission with the Department of Conservation.

Local authorities announced searches were called off, after sea and air searches since Monday had failed to find him, the New Zealand Herald reports.

He went missing from Fishing Rock about 6am on Monday while carrying our routine monitoring on the island in the remote Kermadec group, it was reported. The team are there to conduct conservation work to protect the more than 100 plants native to the Kermadecs.

It was believed Mihai Muncus-Nagy may have been washed off the rock by a wave.

He was part of a team of researchers and volunteers on Raoul Island, 18,000 kilometres from home, and he arrived there in December last year. His blog presents part of his work there: http://mihaiko.wordpress.com/

Mihai Muncus-Nagy was born in Alba-Iulia, central Romania, and is married.
