An online project by the National Museum of Romania's History (MNIR), which pictures Romanian history, was launched yesterday (Mon).
The online project entitled 'ImagoRomaniae' was launched by the MNIR managing director Ernest Oberlander-Tarnoveanu.
The project is largely based on the documentary resources of the museum, but they also expect guests and other partners both from other Romanian museums and private collections to take part in it.
Ernest Oberlander-Tarnoveanu said: "I appreciate that in Romania they preserve at least half a million historical photographs in public collections, to which one can add at least another 150,000 in private collections."
To start the project they used images coming from maps, engravings, paintings, lithographs, and, in the long run, from photographs and films.
They tried to reconstruct this part of the world as "seen through the foreigners' eyes first and then through the Romanians' eyes, especially of those who lived in the second half of the 19th century."
"It is planned to create a site where they should post real images and virtual or fantastic images, of the Romanian space from the 13th century to 1945. Afterwards we are going to develop it up to the '70s or the '80s as much as our resources allow us to do," explained the managing director of the institution.
