Road bosses in the Austrian capital Vienna have opened Europe's biggest salt cellar - with 25,000 tons of the stuff ready to clear the roads when winter snows arrive.

The 4.5 million GBP storehouse - bigger than two football pitches - will keep the city's total stock of rock salt up to 45,000 tons.

And even though the December is still positively balmy in the city, officials say their decision is anything but flakey.

Local Green councillor Ulli Sima explained: "Last winter there was a world wide salt shortage and prices went through the roof. This year we are prepared for anything the weather can throw at us.
