Drama writer Eugen Ionescu and philosopher Emil Cioran have been admitted to the Romanian Academy, its vice president Marius Sala announced today (Thurs).
Ionescu (1909-1994), who settled in Paris in 1945, was a famous playwright and dramatist who best-remembered piece, the 1950 "La Cantatrice Chauve", is seen as a classic of the theatre of absurd. It has been performed every evening at the Huchette Theatre in Paris since 1957.
Philosopher and essayist Emil Cioran (1911-1995) was also born in Romania but lived and worked all his life in Paris. Cioran's first book, the award-winning "On the Heights of Despair," was published in Romania in 1934.
The Romanian Academy is the country’s foremost state institution for scholars, language studies, research and science.
