Romanian director Bobby Paunescu has won the best director award at the Bursa Silk Road Film Festival in Turkey for his debut feature film "Francesca", Turkish media reported yesterday (Sun).
"Francesca" tells the story of a teacher who decides to emigrate to Italy for a better life. She manages to get a job in a place near Milan and convinces her parents to support her. Things get more and more complicated when it turns out Francesca's boyfriend has borrowed money and not paid it back.
The film caused controversy in Italy after its screening at the Venice Film Festival in September and cinemas refused to play it after Alessandra Mussolini, the granddaughter of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, and Verona mayor, Flavio Tosi, took legal action over the film claiming it insulted Italians.
But Italian cinemas are to begin showing it from November 27 after an Italian court rejected Mussolini's demands to have it banned.
Romanian actress Monica Barladeanu, in the role of Francesca, stars alongside Dorian Boguta, Luminita Gheorghiu, Doru Ana, Dana Dogaru and Ion Sapdaru.
