The documentary film "Gandhi’s Children" by Australian David MacDougall has been awarded the grand prize at the 10th Astra Film Festival in Sibiu in central Romania.
The best film in the category international was "Sweetgrass" (USA, 2009) by Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Ilisa Barbash at Harvard University.
"Sweetgrass" was specially screened on Sunday at traditional Romanian shepherds’ village Gura Raului after people had gone to church.
The best Romanian documentary film was "Birds’ Way," by Klara Trencsenyi, with its award coming from the Soros Foundation.
The award by Hungarian Duna TV for Best European Film went to "Singing" by Italian Rosella Schillaci.
The Astra Film festival 2009 had prizes worth 25,000 Euros.
It is one of the most-important events for documentary filmmakers in Europe.
