Two police officers who were present last Wednesday night at Adrian Nastase’s villa when he tried to kill himself and the deputy head of the Bucharest Police together with the former PM’s personal cardiologist are investigated by the anti-corruption prosecutors for aid and abet, the National Anti-Corruption Division (DNA) informed today (Tues).
The three police officers were told during hearings at DNA that they are banned from leaving the country during the investigations.
General Prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi said earlier in the morning that there are suspicions over the correctness of diagnosis put by the doctors to Nastase, currently hospitalized at Floreasca Emergency Hospital at intensive therapy ward. Despite the fact that the former PM has been operated by a medical team headed by surgeon Ioan Lascar, only the cardiologist, Serban Bradisteanu, Nastase’s personal medic, was charged by DNA for aid and abeit.
Since Wednesday, Nastase’s detractors, including former Justice Minister Monica Macovei, who appointed Kovesi Prosecutor General, accused the doctors that Nastase was not severely injured and that he was hospitalized only to avoid imprisonment, and that the suicide attempt was just a sham.
It is not clear why only doctor Bradisteanu was charged, but the local press suspects that he is targeted by the prosecutors because he is the defendant in a separate corruption case. Also, the local press suggests that the Prosecutor’s Office, know to be in president Traian Basescu’s camp is pressing for Nastase’s imprisonment as soon as possible as the European Commission will deliver its report on the Verification and Co-operation Mechanism, noting the progress of Justice reforms in July.

Vasile Astarastoaie, the president of the Romanian Medics’ Guild reacted to the criminal charges against doctor Bradisteanu, one of the country’s most reputed cardiologists, saying that his four hour-long hearing at DNA is unacceptable, and it harms the professional independence of a medic.
"As long as there’s no medical element able to contradict the diagnosis put by the medical team, the start of criminal investigation by the DNA based only on suspicions shows that we are going back to a communist type of mentality from Ceausescu’s regime (…) Bradisteanu’s hearing today may be very well regarded as a pressure against the doctors who are in charge with this case", Astarastoaie said in a communiqué sent a few hours after Bradisteanu’s hearing by prosecutors.
