Boc and the entire PDL leadership resigns following crushing electoral defeat

Michael Leidig

Following a marathon meeting that witnessed some unprecedented low blows and heavy arguments, the president of the Democrat Liberal party (PDL) together with the entire leadership resigned last night. Emil Boc said he will not run for a new mandate for party president. PDL will be led by an interim leadership until a Congress will elect its new leaders. "Both the president of the party and the National Permanent Bureau are assuming the responsibility for the outcome of the local elections", Boc said. The former PM who resigned last December following mass protests against the anti-democratic rule, widespread corruption and dramatic austerity claimed that the decision of his Cabinet were the correct ones and that the party paid the political price for taking Romania out the economic crises. "Those measures were good and correct. They cost us from a political point of view and also electorally. We are resigning because we assume politically our actions", Boc said. Ahead of the Dem Libs party meeting on Thursday Boc said he refuses to resign as he won a mayor mandate in Cluj, his home town, proving that he can still win an election. Meanwhile he changed his mind, announcing he will not run for the party president any longer. "I am not running for PDL president, I will focus on Cluj Napoca City Hall. It it a great honour for me to be the Mayor of the such an important municipality", Boc said. PDL scored less than 15 percent of mayors mandates and county councils' seats in 10 June local elections.
