Searches for cigarette smuglers from Moldova

The prosecutors with the Anti-Organised Crime and Anti-Terrorism Division (DIICOT) conducted 18 house raids this morning (Fri) at the residence of traffickers who were smuggling cigarettes from Moldova,DIICOT press informs in a communique. The cigarettes were introduced in Romania via Ukraine, on the Danube with ferries hidden in raw materials cargoes. The damage estimated by the prosecutors is of some 2.5 million Euros. The group of smugglers included 20 men from Romania and Moldova. The prosecutors conducted simultaneous searches in several counties, including in the cities of Buzau and Galati (South Est) and two two farms, detaining 25 people. The criminal ring was led by 47 year-old Iorgu Ionescu, an underworld boss from Braila (South East) and by Stepan Arabadzhy, who has double Ukrianina and Moldovan citizenship.
