Former head of gendarmes in Constanta arrested for long sharking, blackmail

Several people, including the former head of the Gendarmes in Constanta (South East) were arrested today (Tues) on suspicion of long sharking, blackmail and the setting up of a criminal ring, conning and sequestration, local press informs.

According to prosecutors with the Organised Crime and Anti-Terrorism Division the damage is estimated at some 2 milion Euro.

Prosecutors say the former head of the gendarmes Nicolae Aldea was the leader of the criminal ring, made up of 11 persons, including the president of the People's Party Dan Deaconescu in Constanta, Mariana Ciuciuleacă.

The investigations revealed that the two were blackmailing and sequestrating people who borrowed money from them. The criminal ring functioned from 2005 until very recently, prosecutors say. The suspects amassed an important fortune, detaining 14 villas, over 100 plots of lands in the city and agricultural farmland, a hotel and other properties.
