Ten year-old boy dies trying to save cattle

A ten year old boy from a remote village in Bistrita (North) gave his life to save his family's cattle, Antena3 news channel reports.

The boy tried to save the animals from drowning after they were carried away in a rain swollen river but he slipped on a rock and drowned.

His family observed the boy was missing when the animals arrived home on their own. The parents called the firefighters, who found the child's body after three hours of searching.

The police have opened an investigation into why the boy was left unattended so close to the river.

According to children rights NGOs, thousands of Romanian children from underprivileged families are working from a very early age in agriculture.
