Nine suspects were detained on Thursday night in Ploiesti, Prahova County (Centre) for IT fraud estimated to some 6 million euros, the Anti-Organised Crime and Anti-Terrorism Division (DIICOT) with the Prosecutor's Office informed today (Fri).
DIICOT head Ionut Botnaru says the nine suspects had been detained following house raids at 15 addresses in Bucharest and other seven counties. The prosecutors confiscated computers and other data stocking devices.
The group was specialized in cyber attacks on SIP and VoIP internet accounts. By stealing the personal data of the users they were calling abroad,in Great Britain, Germany, Spain, Taiwan and even Sierra Leone, with only 10-15 percent of the real charge per minute.
The members of the group attacked the servers of the companies offering internet calls services from Hong-Kong and Cyprus, stealing the users personal data and using them to make calls worldwide. The damage is estimated to some 4 million Euros, DIICOT says.
One member of the group attacked the American internet company Kaspersky, disturbing its activities and causing 2.5 million losses. Others were specialized in fishing scams on internet sells websites.
