Siamese babies die

Two Siamese baby girls died, just one day apart at the Grigore Alexandrescu Hospital in Bucharest, Realitatea news channel informs today (Weds).

The first baby died of heart failure on Tuesday night and the doctors decided to start the separation surgery in order to save the conjoined sister's life. The doctors were afraid that the toxins of dead body will move into the healthy baby and intoxicate her to death.

The Siamese girls were born on 26 December last year in Pitesti (centre).

They were moved to Grigore Alexandrescu Paediatric hospital in Bucharest soon after birth.

The doctors had been reluctant to operate on them as the Siamese had the liver fused and their general health condition was very frail. In January, the doctors said the Siamese babies had few chance of survival.
