Bucharest Ambulance swamped by 2,318 calls during Easter break

Michael Leidig

The paramedics in Bucharest and neighbouring Ilfov County were called to 2,138 emergency cases, including 1,400 serious ones over the Easter weekend, the Bucharest Ambulance Service informed today (Mon).

Most of the emergency calls were made for digestive problems due to overeating, but also because of alcohol abuse. Several dozens of suicide attempts and 20 births have also been registered over the weekend.

The director of the Bucharest Ambulance Emergency Service Alis Grasu said the number of calls was not higher than for other bank holiday weekends, however the emergency calls increased this morning as people were waiting to see an improvement of their condition overnight.

Grasu says there had been 44 alcoholic comas registered since Friday night.

The great majority of Romanians celebrated Easter according to the Orthodox calendar on Sunday, 15 April.
