Dutch Ambassador’s credentials delayed over Schengen veto

Michael Leidig

Netherlands’s Labour Party, in opposition, asked the Foreign Affairs Ministry to give an explanation over the delay of the accreditation of the Dutch Ambassador to Bucharest, Radio Netherlands informs today (Tues).

Matthijs van Bonzel nominated by the Dutch Foreign Ministry as the new Ambassador to Romania has been waiting since December to present his credentials to Romanian President Traian Basescu. According the diplomatic unwritten customs, he should have been accredited in the following two months after his arrival. There are no similar precedents in the world of diplomacy, according to experts.

This episode adds to the already tense relations between the two countries. Diplomatic circles are speculating that Basescu did not find time to receive van Bonzel as retaliation to Netherlands’ veto to Romania’s entry into Schengen.

Romania has previously tried to react to Netherlands’s firm stand over EU’s border free area in a rather primitive way, local press notes. In September last year, custom officials under the direction of the fiscal head Sorin Blejnar confiscated several trucks with flowers imported from Holland, saying they were contaminated with ‘dangerous bacteria’.
