Police carry man off the snow and save his life

A man who had collapsed in freezing weather near a river, in Stoina, Gorj, southern Romania, was saved after policemen carried him for several kilometres.

Local policemen had to carry the man themselves, as no car or vehicle could get to the place where the man had collapsed.

The policemen carried the man, who was unconscious and had suffered a hypothermic shock, for more than three kilometres, where an ambulance was waiting to administer first aid.

The man, 46, was transferred to hospital.

Romania is currently under a meteorological advisory notice for cold weather, with temperatures dropping to as low as minus 29C. Forty-one people have died in the last ten days due to the low temperatures. Hundreds of localities are isolated and without electricity, while tens of national roads are closed, especially in southeastern Romania.
