Romania's population down due to migration

Romania's population dropped by 2.6 million persons in the last ten years, the first data of the census performed in October has shown.

Romania has a stable population of 19,042,936, in 7.1 million households, down from the 21,354,396 persons in 2002. The last time Romania had 19 million people was back in 1966.

A World Bank report showed that there are currently 2.769 million Romanians abroad, which is 13.1 per cent of the country's population. A European Commission report said there were around 2.9 million Bulgarian and Romanian citizens living in other EU countries, at the end of last year, which is more than twice as many as shortly before the country's EU accession - 1.4 million at the end of 2006.

Over half of the population lives in urban areas (52,8 per cent, which is 10 million people), while the rest live in rural areas.

Bucharest gathers 8.8 per cent of the country's population - 1,6 million persons.
The largest ethnic minority is represented by the Hungarians - 1,238,000 persons, which represents 6.5 per cent of the population. The second largest minority group is made up of Roma people - with 619,000 persons, which represents 3.2 per cent of the total population. There are also 517,000 Ukrainians, 369,000 Germans, 282,000 Turks, 239,000 Russians and 205,000 Tartars.

The Hungarian population holds the majority in Harghita county (84.8 per cent), Covasna (73.6 per cent), while in Mures county it represents 37.8 per cent.
