Members of Greenpeace broke into the office of a Romanian minister, by passing the guards, and tied themselves with chains to the central heating system, in a protest against the cyanide mining project at Rosia Montana, western Romania.
The Greenpeace militants - from Romania and other countries as well - entered the Environment Minister's office in Bucharest with posters, and asked him to deny the issue of an environmental permit for cyanide gold mining.
Minister Laszlo Borbely said he offered them coffee and water and they had "a peaceful time together."
Romanian President Traian Basescu said in 2011 that any country which has resources must use them, in support of the controversial cyanide mining project in Rosia Montana, Transylvania.
Basescu paid an official visit to Rosia Montana, where supporters as well as opponents to the mining project, gathered and collided and police had to intervene.
Basescu said the project had been buried since 1997 because of cowardly politicians and that it would bring jobs.
The company which plans to extract 300 tons of gold and 1,600 tons of silver is owned by Canadian Gabriel Resources (80 per cent), while the Romanian state holds only a 20 per cent stake.
The company faces opposition to the project by environmental organisations who say that mining using cyanide would destroy the natural environment there and archaeological monuments dating back to the Roman Empire.
