Former PM sentenced to jail for corruption

Former Romanian Prime Minister (PM) Adrian Nastase was sentenced today (Mon) by the High Court of Justice in Bucharest to two years in jail in a corruption trial dating back to 2004.

The decision is not definitive, it can be appealed against.

The file refers to a corruption case back in 2004, when he was a candidate for presidency for the Social Democrat Party. He lost then to the current President Traian Basescu. He has always accused the ruling party and President Traian Basescu of running a campaign against him with the aid of anti-corruption prosecutors.

In December last year, he was acquitted by the High Court of Justice in a corruption case dating back to 2000.

Nastase, 61, who is now the president of the National Council of the opposition party Social Democrat Party PSD, has been previously a Chamber of Deputies chairman, prime minister (2001-2004) and he lost the presidential elections in 2004 to current President Traian Basescu (PDL).
