Romania maintains troops in Afghanistan

Romania will maintain its troops in Afghanistan this year, President Traian Basescu said today (Mon) in Brussels, after a meeting with the state secretary of NATO, Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

Basescu said: "Romania will maintain its forces in Afghanistan in 2012, in the first half of 2013 and we'll reduce our participation (...) as soon as the Afghan forces can take over the missions executed by the Romanian army."

Romania is ready to send 66 trainers for gendarmes in Afghanistan and it is ready to do this after 2014 as well.

Romania has 1,940 troops in Afghanistan.
