Elections merge is unconstitutional

Romania's Constitutional Court decided today (Weds) that the law proposed by the government to merge parliamentary and local elections was against the constitution.

The law, which says parliamentary and local elections would be held at the same time this year, was adopted through a vote of confidence in the government on 15 December.

But it was challenged at the Constitutional Court by the opposition Social Liberal Union (USL), formed of three opposition parties.

The government proposed a draft law to merge the parliamentary and the local elections so that they take place on a single day, in order to cut costs. Prime Minister Emil Boc said at least 20 million Euros would be saved by organising the elections on the same day.

If a law is declared unconstitutional, it must be changed so that it fits the constitution principles.
