Medical system in crisis as thousands of doctors leave the country

Romanian Times

Doctors' College in Romania (CMR) warns over the major crisis in the medical system due to the lack of personnel, as 1,700 doctors left the country this year alone.

Romania's Doctors' College asks the positions in the medical system are unblocked, so as contests can be organised to fill the empty positions now.

Vasile Astarastoae, president of CMR, said in a statement that the medical system in Romania cannot survive under the current conditions.

He said: "The lack of medical personnel endangers the safety of patients and of doctors, who work until exhaustion."

As currently the hirings are blocked in the Romanian public system, no one replaces the doctors who leave to work abroad. Another factor are low salaries, which drive doctors to leave the country.

Romania is currently in last place in Europe, with 1.9 doctors for every 1,000 patients, the document reads.

In the first eight months this year, 1,700 doctors asked for the conformity certificate (good standing certificates) from the CMR to apply for a job abroad.

CMR warns that Romania's medical system is under-financed - as the highest percentage of GDP allotted for the sanitary system was 4.5 per cent in 2008, while European countries allot up to 12 per cent of GDP.

In 2010, there were 2,779 doctors who asked for conformity certificates to leave to work abroad, giving France, Germany and England as their destinations.
