Romania has worst living conditions in EU

Romania is among the EU countries with the worst living conditions, as 43 per cent of its population live in dwellings with no indoor flushing toilet, according to Eurostat data made public today (Weds).

In Bulgaria, 26 per cent of the population lives in this condition, and 17 per cent in Lithuania and Latvia. In 15 EU countries, the percentage is less than 1 per cent.

The proportion of the population living in dwellings with no bath or shower ranged from less than 1 per cent in 17 Member States to 41 per cent in Romania, 18 per cent in Latvia and 16 per cent in Lithuania and Bulgaria.

In 2009, 37 per cent of the population of Romania lived in flats and 61 per cent, in detached houses.

In 2009, the percentage of people living in an overcrowded dwelling ranged widely between Member States, from 1 per cent in Cyprus, 2 per cent in the Netherlands, 3 per cent in Spain and 4 per cent in Ireland, Belgium and Malta to 58 per cent in Latvia, 55 per cent in Romania and Hungary, 49 per cent in Poland and Lithuania and 47 per cent in Bulgaria.
