Romania tries to cover medical-personnel deficit

After the departure of thousands of doctors and nurses from Romanian hospitals for salaries up to ten times higher abroad, leaving a deserted medical system in Romania, the Health Ministry has finally announced new hires in the sector.

It said today (Thurs) that over 3,000 positions open in Romanian hospitals would be filled by the end of the year.

Until now, no new hiring has occurred in the Romanian public sector to cut costs.

The decision to hire over 3000 specialists in the healthcare system was made after an analysis of  "immediate necessities", the Ministry said.

New positions will be available, especially in "hospitals where there is a significant deficit of medical personnel", the Ministry said.

Over 9,000 doctors and nurses have left to work abroad in the last years, according to Health Ministry statistics.
