Begging mafia kept 40 people in flat, police say

Romanian Times

Romanian mafia bosses forced up to 40 people to live in a cramped, tiny flat, Austrian Times reports, quoting police in Vienna.

Sixteen gang chiefs were arrested in Romania and Austria last month following a crackdown on organised begging in the Austrian capital.

Now Federal Crime Office (BK) official Gerald Tatzgern revealed the criminals forced up to 40 beggars of their organisation to sleep in a dirty, small Viennese apartment.

"Everyone of them had to rake in 80 Euros a day. If they didn't then gang bosses violently abused them," he said on Monday.

All suspects were extradited to Romania recently where they face a trial.
