Nine in ten Romanians say economic situation is bad

Nine in ten Romanians consider the country's economic situation bad, and over 60 per cent see it worsening in the next 12 months, a Euro barometer survey shows.

Only seven per cent of Romanians say the country's economic situation is good, while two per cent don't know what to say.

Fifty-three per cent of Romanians think the country's economic situation is very bad, compared to the 28-per-cent average in the EU, and 38 per cent say the situation is bad. Only six per cent think the situation is good, below the 21-per-cent average in the EU.

Over 60 per cent of respondents see the country's economic situation worsening over the next 12 months, 23 per cent expect things to stagnate, and 11 per cent see positive evolution.

Most Romanians, or 85 per cent, say they distrust the government, the highest percentage in the EU.

A quarter of Romanians polled in the survey said the European Union is the organization most capable of countering the effects of the economic and financial crisis, while five per cent cited the United States, six per cent the International Monetary Fund and nine per cent the G20.

The unemployment situation in very bad, in the opinion of 94 per cent of Romanians, whereas the EU average is 83 per cent.

Nearly two-thirds of Romanians support implementing reforms that will make things better for the next generations despite the sacrifices entailed in the process, 23 per cent disagree, and 15 per cent don't know.

Also, 70 per cent of Romanians say the country needs new reforms, and only 14 per cent say current reforms are good.

The survey, conducted twice a year, polled 1,020 Romanians in May.
