Mayor sent to trial on corruption charges

Romanian anti-corruption prosecutors have sent Mayor Antonie Solomon to trial at Arges Court on corruption charges, it was announced today (Fri).

The mayor of the town of Craiova in southern Romania, which has 300,000 inhabitants, was indicted while under arrest.

Solomon was under investigation for allegedly having accepted a 50,000-Euro bribe for issuance of a construction permit to Cornel Penescu, the owner of football club FC Arges, for construction of a store in Craiova.

The mayor has claimed all documents were issued legally.

Penescu was arrested last year on a bribery charge and detained until recently. He was accused of having bribed referees to enable FC Arges to win matches. In the meantime, the team has been relegated to the second league. Penescu was also the owner of Pic, a local chain of stores.

Police said that they found 200,000 Euros in Solomon’s house during a raid.

Solomon was put into preventive attention at the beginning of March.
