Mayor sentenced to jail for corruption

Romanian Times

Another Romanian mayor was sentenced to prison for misuse of office by the Court of Appeals in Cluj-Napoca today (Weds).

Liberal Cristian Anghel, the mayor of Baia Mare, was sentenced to two and half years in prison.

Prosecutors indicted him for having agreed to buy a building three times more expensive than it was really worth. Anti-corruption prosecutors sent him to trial in 2008 for having defrauded the local budget of 400,000 Euros, which he must pay back.

Two other two Romanian mayors have been arrested or sentenced this year in corruption cases.

This month, Antonie Solomon, the Democratic Liberal mayor of the western town of Timisoara, was arrested on suspicion of bribe-taking and forgery by anti-corruption prosecutors.

Democratic Liberal Mayor Mircia Gutau from Ramnicu Valcea was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for bribe-taking in January this year.

Nicolae Dicu, a former deputy mayor, was also sentenced to prison as an accessory to bribe-taking.
