High-risk avian-influenza virus has been detected in Romania

Romanian Times

A highly-pathogenic avian influenza virus had been found at a farm in Tulcea county, Romania, the European Commission (EC) said today (Tues).

It was the first detection of the avian influenza virus H5N1 in the European Union in a year. The last case, confirmed in March 2009, was that of a wild duck in Germany.

Confirmation of a highly-pathogenic strain of avian influenza occurred yesterday at a poultry farm in Letea commune in Tulcea county in the Danube's delta close to the Ukrainian border in southeastern Romania.

Romanian veterinary authority (ANSVSA) confirmed today that there had been two cases in that commune, saying they were isolated and that all EU measures had been applied in the area to stop the spread of the virus.

All poultry at the farm has been killed, and a surveillance area has been set in the village, which is "a small and isolated locality in the Danube Delta where people use boats for transportation," according to ANSVSA.
