Transporters to block the capital in protest

Romanian Times

A traffic blockade is expected to occur this Thursday in Bucharest, when thousands of cars and buses will organise a protest, the same day when an underground strike is scheduled.

Over 11,000 transporters are expected to participate in the protest at noon on Wednesday and Thursday at government headquarters to demand a transport law and the fining of illegal transporters.

The Union of Authorised Transporters said today (Mon) that 1,500 buses and coaches, 600 cars and 10,000 taxis would line up on Kiseleff Boulevard in Bucharest (from Antipa Museum to Piata Presei Libere).

The union represents taxi drivers, the majority of passenger transporters and a quarter of cargo carriers.

The transporters are urging authorities to take action against evasion, estimating that the state loses 300 million Euros in revenue annually from the activity of illegal transporters.

Vasile Stefanescu, the president of the union, said it hadn’t received an invitation from the Transport Ministry for talks although the ministry had issued a press release saying that.

The transporters are also asking for the extension of licenses until 2016, as their validity has been reduced from five years to three years, while leasing contracts for their cars and buses are valid for a longer period.
