Drivers fined for breaking the law at railway crossings

Romanian Times

Over 800 drivers in the Moldova region in eastern Romania have been fined after police check-ups at railway crossings, police said today (Thurs).

The drivers were fined for failing to stop at railway crossings to avoid accidents. Total fines amounted to 25,000 Euros.

Many severe accidents have occurred in Romania in the last year due to violations of laws at railway crossings.

Fourteen people died when a train hit their minibus at a railroad crossing in August last year in Scanteia in Iasi county in eastern Romania. The driver reportedly ignored acoustic signals announcing the arrival of a train that oblige drivers to stop at railway crossings.
