Teachers announce calendar of protests

The Romanian teachers’ union will organize public protests starting on 15 March, union federation FSLI announced today (Weds).

FSLI said teachers would first protest in their localities and a protest would be organized in May in Bucharest.

Teachers are threatening to boycott final exams in June.

They are protesting against the planned lay-off of 17,000 employees in the educational system starting in September and the cut in their wages by the new wage law, which went into effect on 1 January. They claim their salaries have dropped by 15 per cent compared to November last year.

Protests were announced after negotiations with Education Minister Daniel Funeriu failed. He assured teachers' representatives that all teachers' salaries would be paid, as funds for that were available, although some problems had occurred in that regard.
