Basescu welcomed by Japanīs emperor

Romanian Times

Romania's President Traian Basescu, and his wife Maria were welcomed this morning (Weds) by Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

The president participated afterwards in a Japanese-Romanian economic forum at which Basescu said that the Nabucco natural-gas pipeline project was a priority for Romania.

The Romanian president was to meet with Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and sign documents for a 315-million-Euros loan from the Japanese government for construction of an underground line in Bucharest in the afternoon.

The new underground line will reach the international airport in Otopeni.

In May last year, Basescu and his wife Maria welcomed Japanese Prince Akishino and his wife Princess Kiko to Romania. Akishino is the second son of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.

The couple made a four-day visit to Romania during their European tour at the invitation of the Romanian head of state.
