Anti-corruption prosecutors ask for senator´s arrest

Romanian anti-corruption prosecutors have asked that Senator Catalin Voicu be arrested, according to a statement today (Tues) by the National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA).

DNA asked Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu to approve Voicu’s arrest. It is accusing him of influence peddling, falsification of documents and corruption.

Voicu, 45, an opposition Social Democrat senator from Bucharest, has been accused of receiving 260,000 Euros from a local businessman from July to September 2009 in exchange for his intervention with judges at the High Court of Cassation and Justice for a favorable decision in a trial he was involved in.

In another case, Voicu received 30,000 Euros to intervene with police in an investigation of another person.

The senator has also been accused of having asked for high government posiions in exchange for influencing judges at the High Court of Cassation and Justice.

DNA said it had sent 2,663 files on the case to the Justice Minister.
