Underground workers to go on strike next week

Underground unionists in Bucharest said today (Tues) a general strike would begin at 4am and end at 4pm on 18 March.

Union leader Ioan Radoi said that the strike halted last November by a Bucharest court had been ruled legal last week by the Court of Appeals. Consequently, the labor conflict will continue to its next stage, a general strike.

Underground workers went on strike last November, demanding a wage increase of 20 per cent.

The industrial action caused chaos in capital Bucharest, and extra buses and trams had to be laid on for the 600,000 people who used the subway every day.
