Romania to host three batteries of the US anti-missile shield

Romania would host three batteries with eight missiles apiece in the US defensive missile system in which it agreed to participate last month, President Traian Basescu said today (Fri).

Basescu said: "The system is a defensive one and cannot be turned into an offensive one."

The president also said that Romania would ensure its own protection by doing so.

Romania will be involved in phase two of the US missile shield, which is the hosting of land interceptors, SM-3 block 1B interception missiles that will become operational in 2015.

Romania's involvement will feature the placement of land-based interceptors, not radars, which will be located in other countries.

There will not be any missiles on Romanian or foreign ships in the Black Sea.
